Government has disclosed that about 7000 young entrepreneurs have been engaged under the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP) program designed to combat youth unemployment in the country. According to the Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia revealed the policy since its inception, has engaged thousands of youth through business development and entrepreneurship training which will help them start new businesses and compete well in both national and international markets.
The Akuff Addo administration in 2017 launched the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP) as an ambitious plan to promote growth and development of entrepreneurship and to accelerate job creation for national development.
The initiative is a multi-pronged approach aimed at creating a conducive and business-friendly environment to stimulate enterprise activities and provide integrated national support for start-ups and small businesses that would in turn generate employment for the teeming youth of Ghana. Dr Bawumia revealed these 7000 young entrepreneurs will receive further training which 1000 of them will be selected in the first phase and supported with some funding to launch their businesses.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Salifu Sa-eed, as Guest of Honour during the Speech and Prize Giving Day at the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale over the weekend, the Vice President charged the students gathered at the program and all others across the country to continue to achieve academic excellence, develop their entrepreneurial skills and take advantage of the opportunities presented by this program.
Government last year allocated a seed capital of US$10 into the NEIP program. Meanwhile, the NEIP entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with an Indian Manufacturing company to provide manufacturing equipment under the Industrialization program of NEIP to feed into the one district, one factory programme. This was signed between the NEIP and Action Construction Equipment Limited and Samdeb Company Limited, the consultant on the project.
“… I am also happy to announce that our Government will soon launch the Nations Builders Corp. This program will provide direct employment to 100,000 graduates, under different models including Sanitation, Revenue, Health, Teaching, Digitization and industry. Later this month, after cabinet approval, the application process will be opened and interested graduates will be selected and equipped with some basic skills and training before being posted to partner agencies or firms” he said.
