The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has hinted its plans to meet managers of the various local Radio Stations in the Tamale metropolis to strategize plans to control excesses of utterances which would undermine the peace and security of the area.
According to the Northern Regional Minister who is also the Chairman of REGSEC, Mr. Salifu Sa-eed disclosed that, REGSEC will meet with all radio stations within the Tamale Metropolis on Monday, 26th February, 2018 to discuss measures to control excesses in utterances and preaching on radio stations.
He stated that, REGSEC will seek to re-echo its caution to all Radio Stations to be diligent on the contents of whatever materials they put out to the general public so that passions will not be inflamed to create disturbances in the Area.
“Freedom of speech must be exercised in a manner that it does not hurt or injure others in any way and Radio Stations must not allow materials that seek to create misunderstanding in the society” he opined.
The Minister made these comments in a communiqué issued by the Regional Security Council. This is in the wake of the recent rising tensions between two Sunni factions, the Ambariya and Masjid Bayaan Sunni sets in Tamale. The confrontations nearly escalated into deadly clash at the Northern Regional Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service last Wednesday when leader of the Masjid Bayaan Institute, Sheikh Basha lodge a complaint at the police headquarters over an attack by one of the scholars of Ambariya at his mosque during one of his preaches.
As a result, the Chairman of REGSEC, Mr. Salifu Sa-eed revealed that, security personnel have been deployed to certain key areas involved in the recent disturbances. He added further that “in the same vein, security patrols have been intensified within the broad concept of the operation “Suhudoo” (Calm Lives), in the Metropolis. These measures are expected to demonstrate the preparedness of the Security Agencies to deal with the situation”.
The Minister however gave a stern warning to residents in the area against acts that seeks to destabilize the prevailing peace in the metropolis and the region as a whole. “Any person or group of persons found to be engaged in any acts that can jeopardize the peace in the Area will be dealt with in line with the law” he stressed.
