Officers of the Ghana Police Service in Tamale were attacked at Gbulahagu, a suburb of Tamale over the weekend on January 7, 2018. This followed an attack on a 35 year old woman identified as Memunatu Neindoow on the allegations that she was a witch.
Narrating the situation to northstarfmonline.com, the Northern Regional Police PRO, ASP Yussif Tanko said the police got information and dispatched a team to visit the village and rescue the victim. He stated on arrival, the police met the victim in a burnt thatch house with bruises and people surrounding her.
He indicated that as soon as the team attempted to rescue her, there was a sudden blackout, followed by firing of AK47 raffles amidst throwing of stones. According to ASP Tanko, the team quickly made their way to their vehicle to leave the community but on their way the road was blocked with wood and stones.
He said when they tried to remove the wood and stones in order to drive away, he added stones were pelted at their vehicle and AK47 raffles were fired into the vehicle.
He revealed that, the police team managed to leave the village with broken wheel screens, back screens and side glasses.
“When they left the community they realized that in the heat, one of their men had been left in the community, so they quickly mobilize and sent men there and he was rescued and brought back. When the vehicle was examined, we found bullet holes from AK47 raffles and the way and manner the holes were, was a clear indication that, the shooters had planned on killing the police officers” he stated.
He therefore said that, the case is currently under investigations and everything possible will be done to ensure that, the perpetrators will brought to book.
