The incumbent Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has described the late Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama as a Nationalist and a Sports Icon. Dr. Bawumia said “his whole life was devoted to uplifting humanity from obscurity to the limelight. He maintained that, Aliu Mahama was immensely influential in lifting people like Abedi Pele and many other sports men and women from obscurity to the limelight.
“Alhaji Aliu Mahama is indeed a National hero and a Sports icon. His achievements and deeds transcends space and time, his name is therefore immortalize by naming the Tamale Sports Stadium, which after all he was instrumental in the building of this Tamale Sports Stadium, it is only only fair and just that Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo would name this stadium after him” he stated.
He continued that “this stadium symbolizes the love that Alhaji Aliu Mahama had for the development for Tamale in particular and our dear nation Ghana as a whole”. “As Alhaji Aliu Mahama used sports as a means of uniting many fragmental football teams and supporters from the position of weakness and mediocrity to an enviable position of strength and excellence, so should the name of this stadium be a symbol of unity, an edifice to ignite the spirit of selflessness and honest, emolument to inculcate the values of patriotism, nationalism and volunteerism in Ghanaians” he indicated.
The Vice President made these statements during a ceremony to rename the Tamale Sports Stadium to the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale over the weekend on December 10, 2017. It is the 5th anniversary of the passing of the former second gentleman of Ghana under the erstwhile John Kufour administration.
The inauguration of the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium comes as a fulfillment of a campaign promise prior to the December 2016 general elections. Then candidate Akuffo Addo promised to rename the edifice after the former Vice President.
Dr Bawumia however expressed his excitement for such a glorious day has arrived and noted characteristic of the NPP government, “I am here to fulfill one of our campaign promises”.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, a health walk was organized where hundreds of people from all walks of life participated on the principal streets of the northern regional capital, Tamale.
Also, a Quranic recitation was organized at his residence and everything was climaxed on Sunday with a football match between the Northern Zone and Southern Zone at the new Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.
Dignitaries who were present at the event were the widow of the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama, Hajia Ramatu Mahama, the Northern Regional Minister, Hon Salifu Sa-eed, Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu, Youth and Sports Minister, Issac Kwame Asiamah, the Tamale Mayor, Musah Iddrisu Superior, the President of Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, Chiefs as well as other stakeholders from and across the country.
