The Ghana Developing Communities Association (GDCA) has commended the government of President Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo for implementing some pro-poor policies and programs. The GDCA lauded the policies rolled out in fulfilment of promises made by the New Patriotic party (NPP) flagbearer, Nana Akuffo Addo in the run up to the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
According to the Acting GDCA Chairman, Alhaji A.M Baba said significant among the policies are the Free Senior High School programme and the Planting for Food and Jobs, which many Ghanaians have started to benefit from. “We want to commend Government for these bold initiatives” he stressed. He added the policies have positive impact on the lives of many Ghanaians.
“While these policies and programmes are being rolled out, we must expect challenges to confront us. We want to make an appeal to Government not be shy of this, but to accept mistakes when they are made. In this way we can all learn and work to perfect the programmes and policies. Approaching errors with high handedness is likely to kill initiative and innovation on the part of those who seek to help and improve the system, as well as keep challenges buried due to the fear. At the same time lack of flexibility will discourage other stakeholders to contribute their quota to the ensure the success of the policies and programmes” he admonished.
Alhaji Baba made this commendation whilst addressing stakeholders at the 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Dalung, a suburb of the Kumbungu district in the northern region. It is a requirement that as an Organization, the Ghana Developing Communities Association upholds its commitment to meeting its statutory requirements of making sure that the AGM is held annually.
Apart from meeting the statutory obligation the AGM serves as a platform for accounting for its stewardship of the resources available to the organization. Then candidate Akuffo Addo promised to the people of Ghana, Free SHS, One District One Factory, Planting for Food and Jobs, Subsidizing prices of fertilizers to farmers amongst other things. After assuming office on January 7, he has since been implementing some of the promises. Notably is the Free SHS, Planting for Food and Jobs, Fertilizer subsidy and restoring the Nursing Trainee Allowances.
Meanwhile, Alhaji A.M Baba lamented in some areas where their programmes have implemented, there some cases of disturbances and mentioned Bimbilla, Nakpanduri and other areas due to the lingering chieftaincy conflicts. However, he stated the intervention of the security protocols, the situations were brought under control.
This year’s General Meeting was held without the presence of the founder and Chairman of the Organization, Gushei-Naa Prof. Abubakari Alhassan. He passed on to glory in November 2016. Present at the meeting was his son who is the current Chief of Gushei, Gushei-Naa Nuhu, the Zongo Northern Regional Chief, Sheikh Naa Abdul-Mumin Dalhu, a representative of the Northern Regional Minister, Chief of Dalung and other stakeholders.
